As the world commemorates the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11
attacks, a haunting image has resurfaced, once again stirring powerful
emotions. This image, captured by journalist Bill Biggart, shows the collapse
of the Twin Towers and is remarkable not only for its chilling subject but also
because it was the final photograph taken by Biggart before his death.
A Journalist's Final Image
The 9/11 attacks were among the most devastating events in
US history, leading to the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. Bill Biggart, an
American freelance photojournalist known for his work documenting conflicts and
social movements, was on the scene as the tragedy unfolded. He captured what
would be his last photograph—a powerful image of the towers falling.
Bill Biggart: A Brave Photojournalist
Biggart was the only photojournalist who lost his life while covering the 9/11 attacks. He ventured closer to the scene than any other journalist, determined to document history. Even as his wife called to check on him after the first tower collapsed, he reassured her that he was safe with firefighters and promised to meet her soon. Tragically, that would be their last conversation.
Four days later, on September 15, Biggart’s body was found, along with his cameras. His final images, preserved on a CompactFlash card, remain a lasting tribute to his courage and dedication.
Even in the face of imminent danger, the Journalists Club honours and commends Biggart's unwavering courage in capturing history with remarkable dedication.
